Jazz guitar player Ted Dunbar like his parents and brother is a qualified pharmacist. He qualified Cum Laude from Texas Southern University in Houston and practiced pharmacy for sixteen years. Shortly after Dunbar began to play the trumpet and was soon playing in the Lincoln High School Band in Port Arthur. This he did on a college trip to Indianapolis. Dunbar was so impressed by Montgomery’s playing that he decided to move to Indianapolis to join in the local jazz scene there. The young guitarist befriended Montgomery and other leading jazz musicians including Freddie Hubbard, Slide Hampton, Leroy Vinnegar, Larry Ridley and David Baker. Baker was to prove an enormous influ­ence on Dunbar introducing the young musi­cian to the Lydian concept.

In 1966 Ted Dunbar moved to Dallas and he played jazz guitar in a quintet with Red Garland and David Newman. While in Dallas he met saxo­phonist Bill Harper and they began to play regularly. When Harper moved to New York Dunbar followed, working there as a pharma­cist during the day and as a musician at night. Dunbar soon found he was much in demand for club and studio work. In 1972 he gave up pharmacy to devote his whole time to jazz guitar music. He worked with Jimmy Heath and McCoy Tyner, the Gil Evans orchestra and in 1971 he took over the jazz guitar chair from John McLaughlin in Tony Williams’s Lifetime. This position he held for around a year.

In 1972 Dunbar began his involvement in music education when he began to teach at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He soon became an Associate Professor of Music, a position he continues to hold today.
